While it is clear that the print medium is under intense pressure, I think it remains to be seen whether or not it is the dinosaur that some in the audience suggested. I spoke with Gyllenhaal after the meeting and found him genuine and personable. He also expressed concern when some members of my profession criticized the Herald and the objectivity of some of its reporters. Thankfully, he also acknowledged that media relations pros can continue to aid the newsroom.
As it relates to the future of newspapers, I know one thing for sure: The news-gathering function and true reporting won't go away. Whether print newspapers are dominant or even alive in 10 years remains to be seen. However, the newsroom that meets the demands of our society through its watchdog, investigative and information-creator roles should be around for some time. The trust factor remains significant among other reasons.
